1. Scope
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) apply to the use of the apps spectacled Journals, spectacled Notes and spectacled Tasks (together “spectacled”) on Android, iOS, desktop and the web, and to the related services offered by:

The terms of the respective app store (e.g. Google Play, Apple App Store) also apply to downloads from that store.
2. What spectacled is
spectacled is a family of apps for journals, notes and tasks based on the open standards CalDAV and iCalendar. The apps store your data on your device and synchronize it with a CalDAV server of your choice. We do not provide CalDAV storage and do not operate user accounts.
3. Availability, prices and purchases
spectacled is available:
- as paid apps on Google Play and the Apple App Store, at the price shown on the respective store page,
- free of charge as the web app, as downloads from GitHub and via F-Droid, and as source code (see section 4).
Purchases on Google Play or the Apple App Store are made through the respective store. Payment, invoicing and refunds are handled by the store under its terms. For apps obtained from the Apple App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies in addition to these Terms.
Donations are voluntary and do not create any claim to features, support or availability.
Beta versions
In addition to regular releases, we offer beta versions for testing (for example via TestFlight, Google Play test tracks or pre-releases on GitHub). Beta versions are still under development. They may contain errors, may change or lose data, and may introduce changes that are not backwards compatible. If you use a beta version, be particularly careful with your data: keep current backups, and consider testing with data you can afford to lose.
4. Open source license
The source code of spectacled is published at github.com/TechbeeAT/spectacled under the Apache License 2.0. Your rights to use, modify and distribute the source code are governed exclusively by that license. These Terms do not restrict them. Third-party components included in spectacled are subject to their own licenses, which are listed in the apps.
5. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- choosing, operating or contracting your CalDAV server and complying with its terms,
- keeping your credentials and API keys safe,
- keeping backups of important data, especially when using beta versions,
- using spectacled in compliance with applicable law.
6. Optional services
6.1 Hosted proxy for the web app
For the web app, we offer an optional hosted proxy (spectacled-proxy.fly.dev) for users who cannot run their own. It relays traffic between your browser and your CalDAV server (and, if you use it, your AI provider). As described in the Privacy Policy, it technically has access to your credentials and entries while they pass through.
- The hosted proxy is provided free of charge, independently of whether you purchased an app, and on a best-effort basis. We do not guarantee its availability, and we may limit, change or discontinue it at any time.
- You may only use it to access CalDAV servers you are authorized to access.
- We may block requests or access in case of abuse, excessive use or security risks.
- We recommend running your own proxy; instructions are available on GitHub.
6.2 AI feature
The optional AI feature sends text you select to an AI provider you configure (e.g. Anthropic) using your own API key or server. Your relationship with that provider, including any costs, is governed exclusively by its terms. We are not a party to it.
AI-generated suggestions may be incomplete or wrong. Please review them before saving or relying on them.
7. Acceptable use
You must not:
- use spectacled or our services for unlawful purposes,
- interfere with or attempt to compromise the security or operation of our services, in particular the hosted proxy,
- use the hosted proxy to access systems without authorization, or to send spam or automated mass requests,
- distribute malicious content through our services.
8. Changes to the apps and services
We develop spectacled continuously and may change, extend or remove features. We do not guarantee that the apps will be compatible with every CalDAV server or device, or that our services will be available without interruption. For paid apps, mandatory statutory consumer rules on changes to digital products remain unaffected.
9. Liability
We are liable without limitation for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence. Liability for slight negligence is excluded. This limitation does not apply to personal injury, or wherever liability is mandatory under applicable law, in particular under the Austrian Product Liability Act (PHG).
We are not liable for data loss that would have been avoided by keeping regular backups, or for the availability, security or behavior of third-party services you choose (CalDAV servers, AI providers, app stores).
Mandatory consumer rights remain unaffected, in particular statutory warranty rights for paid apps (e.g. under the Austrian Consumer Warranty Act, VGG).
10. Trademarks and website content
The name “spectacled”, the logos and the content of this website are owned by Techbee e.U., unless stated otherwise. The Apache License 2.0 does not grant rights to use these names or logos except as required to describe the origin of the software.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms when spectacled or our services change. We will publish the current version at https://spectacled.techbee.at/terms-of-service/ and announce significant changes on the website or in the apps’ release notes. You can stop using spectacled at any time.
12. Applicable law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by Austrian law, excluding its conflict-of-law rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of your country of habitual residence.
For businesses, the competent court in Vienna has exclusive jurisdiction. Consumers can bring claims before the courts at their place of residence or at our registered office, and can be sued only at their place of residence.
